Woodworking Renaissance is a visionary project aimed at revitalizing Cairo’s woodworking craftsmanship, specifically in the vibrant El-Manasra area. Inspired by the enduring impact of French colonization on Egyptian furniture styles and referencing the esteemed woodworking documentation of L’Art Du Menuisier from 18th-century France, this initiative seeks to establish an urban network connecting specialized workshops to produce exceptional furniture pieces.
The project’s core objective is to facilitate seamless collaboration and expertise among three key workshops: one specializing in wood chiseling and fabrication, another excelling in ornamentation and carving, and a third renowned for staining and painting techniques. However, a critical element was missing – the treatment and cutting of raw wood into standardized or custom wood panels.

To address this gap, Woodworking Renaissance proposes constructing a new workshop on an empty lot adjacent to existing facilities. This new hub will handle the crucial task of treating and cutting raw wood, completing the circular system and enhancing production efficiency. The project also envisions incorporating housing units above the workshop, fostering a closely-knit woodworking community where artisans and craftsmen can reside.
By celebrating the artistry and heritage of Cairo’s woodworkers, Woodworking Renaissance breathes new life into this cherished craft. Drawing inspiration from the renowned French woodworking encyclopedia, L’Art Du Menuisier, and its intricate drawing techniques and meticulous detailing, this project exemplifies a profound appreciation for artistry. Throughout the endeavor, the influence of this esteemed reference seamlessly integrates into various aspects, including drawing style, intricate detailing, and even urban, architectural and interior design.
