Esna, located along the Nile River south of Luxor, is engaged in a project to preserve its heritage sites, aiming to establish itself as a prominent cultural destination. The collaborative Rediscovering Esna’s Cultural Heritage Assets (RECHA) project, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), involves Takween, CID Consulting, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, and Luxor governorate. This initiative seeks to document and protect Esna’s significant heritage sites, driving sustainable revitalization and economic growth while celebrating its rich cultural legacy.
I was commissioned by CID Consulting to design and execute a comprehensive Travel Guide for the city of Esna. This guide serves as a handy companion for tourists as they explore and immerse themselves in the city’s unique offerings. The guidebook features a thoughtfully designed map, designed by Farah Abdelhamid, strategically highlighting key heritage sites and main attractions. Each location is numbered and accompanied by a legend that directs visitors on a sequential journey, starting from their cruise entrance gate and ticket kiosk, leading them to the main temples and bustling markets.
Additionally, the travel guide delves into the rich historical narratives of these heritage sites, offering captivating stories that bring the past to life. It also provides a brief exploration of the diverse architectural styles and eras that continue to grace Esna, spanning from the Pharaonic era to Greco-Roman and Ottoman influences that still endure today.
In my role, I also had the opportunity to add to the Brand Identity and design an array of merchandise and promotional materials that align with the city’s new branding. From billboards and postcards to tote bags and stationary items, I ensured that tourists could take home souvenirs that would commemorate their memorable visit to Esna.
